In mid February, 1916, 20th Division which included 7th Cornwall Light Infantry of 61 Brigade, moved to Ypres and took over the Boesinghe sector in the north-east of the salient, on the left of the British line. When not in the front line, which was more a series of posts rather than a continuous line of trenches, they were in dug-outs on the canal bank. On 11th April, 1916, 7th Cornwall Light Infantry was occupying these front line posts when in what the Battalion Diary recorded as being, “its first attack by the Germans” one of these posts was hit by an intense bombardment which isolated it from the rest of the battalion. The enemy then followed this up with an attack by 2 lines of infantry. Very few of them reached the position held by 7th Cornwall but there was some heavy fighting which resulted in 60 casualties for the defenders. One of those killed was William Plummer.
